Scrap Mettle SOUL Community Health Performance project January 2003 REVIEW
Methods of working Public access kiosks
|
'Imagine Southwark' is an organisation which supports and enables people in Southwark to create a place to be more the way they would like it to be, based on the best of what is already there. Design Team - who we are |
|
The intent is to work with individuals and organizations to participate in a series of 'Imagine Southwark' activities within the London Borough of Southwark.
|
'Imagine Southwark' is an umbrella group for all ’Imagine’ projects happening in Southwark such as 'Imagine Peckham' and will become a body which can apply for funds.
|
The concept is based on a similar process used in Chicago, which helped bring people together across boundaries of age, race, experience, and economics to reflect on their relationship with the city. This has resulted in many positive changes in the city of Chicago. |
Localised issues
People in Southwark may prefer to identify with smaller chunks of Southwark, therefore we will look at issues by area or topic. For example:
Imagine Health Getting people involved in processes that can influence their own health, the care they receive and the health of their communities.
Imagine Peckham where stakeholders including residents, service providers, business communities, and the voluntary sector Imagine how they would ideally like Peckham to be, based on the best of what is already happening.
Progress of Imagine Southwark/ Imagine Peckham
| As young people are key to the future , we ran the first event, a one day workshop in Peckham during the February 2002 half-term break. Outcomes from the workshop included: What people liked about Peckham, Projects that were already happening in Peckham and how they would like to be involved | |
| Following the workshop, a small group of us met to discuss next steps. | |
| We have researched sources of funds and resources for healthy living, community safety, jobs and training | |
| We have established the principle of Community Information portals on Public Access Kiosks in places such as Burger King Peckham, giving free access to those resources | |
| Three of us received one-off funding to attend the 10th Anniversary 'Imagine Chicago' conference in September, where we met people from around the world, all working on Imagine projects. Imagine Chicago Re-visited | |
| We are planning a Community Health Project based on local experiences and performances by the Scrap Mettle SOUL (Stories of Urban Life) company from the USA in January 2003 |
Future funding will be sought and used to:
| Work with community groups to make changes in their own areas | |
| Sponsor young people in projects | |
| Provide training in the way of working | |
| Provide funding for small start up projects related to Imagine Southwark | |
| Carry out research into the best of existing Internet-based resources | |
| Provide support for web-design, IT issues and co-ordination with other web site owners |
'Imagine Southwark' will have smaller sub-groups such as Imagine Peckham, or subject specific such as
Imagine Business in Peckham or Imagine Art in Peckham or
Imagine Education in Peckham or Imagine Environment in Peckham
